A Kakheti Road Trip: Sighnaghi, Telavi and Time to Slow Down

Plan a relaxed Kakheti road trip from Tbilisi with hilltop views, village lunches and overnight stops in Sighnaghi or Telavi.

There is a moment on the approach to Sighnaghi when the view opens and your carefully planned schedule starts to feel less important. Beyond the rooftops lies the Alazani Valley, with the Caucasus rising in the distance when the weather is clear. This is a good place to discover a different kind of Georgia road trip: fewer kilometres, longer lunches and enough time to enjoy where you have arrived.

Start with Sighnaghi, not a checklist

Make Sighnaghi your first overnight stop rather than one of five places to photograph before dinner. Its old streets, fortress walls and valley views reward walking. Leave the car in a permitted parking area and explore on foot. An early evening stroll gives you a chance to notice details that disappear when you hurry between viewpoints.

Nearby Bodbe can be a separate, unhurried visit. These are active religious sites, so dress respectfully and follow the rules displayed at the entrance. Keep a light layer in the car even when the afternoon feels warm.

Give Telavi a day of its own

Continue towards Telavi for a change of pace. The town is a useful base for exploring Kakheti, but it is also worth spending time in the centre rather than driving straight through. Build your day around a walk, a market visit and a lunch chosen for the food, not just the view. If a winery visit is important to you, contact the host in advance instead of assuming tastings are available whenever you arrive.

Wine and driving should never be part of the same plan. Arrange a local driver, designate a driver who will not drink, or stay close enough to return without getting behind the wheel. A rental car gives you flexibility between towns; it does not make drinking and driving acceptable.

Choose the route to suit the day

When arranging car rental in Tbilisi, explain whether you intend to stay on main roads or visit rural properties. Do not assume that every driveway marked on a map is suitable for every vehicle. Confirm your approach with the host and your rental provider. If you are considering the Gombori route, check current weather and road information before setting out.

Leave room for the unexpected

Our suggested plan is one night in Sighnaghi and another near Telavi, with a flexible final morning. It is a planning idea, not a promise about driving times. Choose a car with enough luggage space, download your route and avoid making the last leg a rushed drive after dark. The most memorable part of a Kakheti road trip may be the stop you did not put on the itinerary.
